LOSWIFT™Lactulose: Key Application Values in the Medical Field
What is LOSWIFT™Lactulose?
Synthetic Prebiotic, Medical Applications
LOSWIFT™Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide composed of galactose and fructose linked by a β-1,4 glycosidic bond. It does not occur naturally in nature and is typically produced through the isomerization of lactose under alkaline conditions. As a prebiotic, LOSWIFT™Lactulose possesses unique physicochemical properties and physiological activities, finding wide applications in the medical and food industries.
Health Benefits
Inhibition of Secondary Bile Acid Formation
LOSWIFT™Lactulose can acidify colonic contents by stimulating the growth of bifidobacteria, and its effect on secondary bile acid metabolism has been extensively studied. In a study involving middle-aged individuals (31-54 years) and elderly individuals (56-81 years), subjects were given 0.3 g/kg of LOSWIFT™Lactulose twice daily for 12 weeks. The results showed that after LOSWIFT™Lactulose administration, the concentration and excretion of secondary bile acids decreased. In addition, fecal weight increased and dry weight decreased; although intestinal transit time did not change, fecal pH values decreased after 6-12 weeks. In elderly individuals, deoxycholic acid levels in bile were higher, but cholic acid was lower. These studies indicate that LOSWIFT™Lactulose has a positive effect in reducing secondary bile acid levels and may have potential protective effects on colon health.
Significant Effect in the Treatment of Constipation
LOSWIFT™Lactulose has been widely used in the treatment of constipation, with a unique mechanism of action that is both safe and effective. Unlike traditional laxatives, LOSWIFT™Lactulose is not decomposed by the specific disaccharidase in the small intestine and can reach the colon unchanged, where it serves as an energy source for carbohydrate-splitting bacteria, predominantly lactobacillus acidophilus and L-bifidus. During this fermentation process, low molecular weight organic acids such as lactic acid and formic acid are produced. LOSWIFT™Lactulose can retain water in the intestine, increase fecal volume, stimulate intestinal peristalsis, and thereby promote defecation. Since the 1960s, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has been used to treat constipation in patients of all ages, including infants. As an osmotic laxative, it usually takes effect within 24-48 hours. Compared with traditional stimulant laxatives, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has a milder effect, does not cause intestinal spasms and electrolyte disorders, and is safe for long-term use, especially suitable for patients with chronic constipation and the elderly.
Reducing Blood Ammonia Levels and Assisting in the Treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy
LOSWIFT™Lactulose plays an important role in reducing blood ammonia levels and is one of the key drugs in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. Hepatic encephalopathy is a central nervous system dysfunction caused by severe liver damage, which leads to ammonia metabolism disorders and elevated blood ammonia levels. LOSWIFT™Lactulose reduces bacterial production of ammonia in the intestines, draws ammonia from the blood to the colon, and then drains it through waste. It is hydrolysed by colonic bacteria and acts as promoting agent for their growth and increasing biomass formation. However, for the synthesis of bacterial protein, ammonia and nitrogen are used, but the production of ammonia is inhibited by acidifying the intestinal content. Studies showed that the concentration of ammonia in the blood in the control and LOSWIFT™Lactulose-treated groups after administration of meat is 12.65 ± 1.64 μg/mL and 8.45 ± 0.90 μg/mL, respectively. Independent of pH, LOSWIFT™Lactulose acts by increasing the incorporation of ammonia in the bacterial proteins. In addition, it has been shown in vitro that the LOSWIFT™Lactulose inhibits the synthesis and the activity of bacterial enzymes that generate ammonia. Studies have shown that patients with hepatic encephalopathy who take LOSWIFT™Lactulose have significant improvements in the number of abnormal neuropsychological tests, cognitive function, and quality of life.
Application Advantages
Advantages in the Treatment of Salmonella Carriers
LOSWIFT™Lactulose has important medical application value in nontyphoid salmonella carriers. In this indication, LOSWIFT™Lactulose is used in dosages of up to 60 g per day. It is believed that this leads to a sharp drop of the colonic pH, which makes the survival of salmonella difficult. The excretion of salmonella in two groups of outpatients who were treated with LOSWIFT™Lactulose showed that after a period of 4 weeks, the organisms were removed in 68.6%. In contrast, among the twenty-three adults who did not receive treatment, 56.5% were still excreting in the organism after this period. In addition, the duration of treatment with LOSWIFT™Lactulose was performed. Among sixty-four patients, thirty-seven patients received different antibiotics, fourteen received LOSWIFT™Lactulose and in thirteen patients, symptoms have been treated previously. The length of the shedding period was longer for the group receiving antibiotics (4 weeks). The same study showed that treatment with LOSWIFT™Lactulose resulted in a shorter period of excretion in these patients.
Unique Value in the Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are two major chronic diseases of the inflammatory bowel disease. The effects of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on both bacteria and bacterial endotoxin in the intestine provide a theoretical basis for its use in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Oral therapy of such patients with LOSWIFT™Lactulose causes an increased production of low molecular weight organic acids in the colon with a significant decrease in faecal pH, thus creating favourable conditions for Lactobacillus acidophilus growing which inhibit the coliforms, bacteroides, Salmonella and Shigella. LOSWIFT™Lactulose might have the following effects: change of the colonic flora with a reduction in potential pathogens; infection limiting role by reducing the urinary and respiratory tract infections; a reduction in the production of gut endotoxins and a decrease in the absorbance of gut endotoxin; regulation of bowel habit, especially suitable for the patients with constipation. Therefore, LOSWIFT™Lactulose may provide an alternative form of therapy for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. It also might reduce the frequency of relapse during long-term maintenance therapy. Moreover, it has been shown that therapeutic use of LOSWIFT™Lactulose is safe, with adverse drug reactions generally being few and mild.
