Applications of LOSWIFT™Lactulose in Medical Field
What is LOSWIFT™Lactulose?
Functional Carbohydrate, Medical Benefits
LOSWIFT™Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide composed of galactose and fructose linked by a β - 1,4 glycosidic bond. It does not occur naturally in nature and is typically produced through the isomerization of lactose under alkaline conditions. As a prebiotic, LOSWIFT™Lactulose possesses unique physicochemical properties and physiological activities, finding wide applications in the medical and food industries.
It is a white, odourless powder and has a sweet taste. Its unique properties make it ideal for medical treatment and health improvement.
Unlike some other sugars,LOSWIFT™Lactulose is not digested in the small intestine as the specific disaccharidase is lacking. It transits unchanged to the colon where it serves as an energy source for the carbohydrate - splitting bacteria, predominantly lactobacillus acidophilus and L - bifidus.
Health Benefits
Osmotically Active Laxative Effects and Safety Profile
In the colon, LOSWIFT™Lactulose is degraded into short - chain fatty acids (SCFA) during bacterial fermentation. Thus, the intestinal content acidifies, the osmotic pressure rises and stool volume increases, which are the cause of the pH decreasing. This decrease in pH increases the formation of ammonium ions, which unlike ammonia, cannot diffuse through the intestinal mucosa. This leads to characterise the laxative effect of the LOSWIFT™Lactulose by a shorter colon transit time and bowel movement accelerated. All these factors are favourable for a healthy bowel. However, as for other commonly used osmotic laxatives,LOSWIFT™Lactulose can cause electrolytic imbalances in sensitive individuals. However, the action of LOSWIFT™Lactulose is more safe because it is due to its laxative action and to a proper action on the motility and colonic transit. It stimulates peristalsis by increasing acidification, gas formation and increased sense of urgency through the volume of intestinal contents.
Protective Effects Against Colon Carcinogenesis
Colon cancer develops from the lining of the large intestine or colon. In 70% of cases, the tumour grows in the sigmoid (loop located in the left iliac fossa). In the context of colon carcinoma, the lowered faecal concentrations of secondary bile salts are noticed when the LOSWIFT™Lactulose was administrated to healthy volunteers. In contrast to this given observation of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on the secondary bile salts, such observations were not systematically confirmed. It was reported that the recurrence rate of colon adenomas in the large bowel was reduced after LOSWIFT™Lactulose administration. Moreover, LOSWIFT™Lactulose suppressed DNA damage in the colon mucosa of rats treated with 1, 2 - dimethylhydrazine. These findings suggest that LOSWIFT™Lactulose may have potential protective effects against colon carcinogenesis.
Enhancement of Mineral Absorption for Bone Health
LOSWIFT™Lactulose can significantly augment the absorption of calcium, if the alimentation contains at least 0.3% of calcium. Magnesium is poorly absorbed: intestinal absorption is about 30%. By performing tests on the rats, it has been shown that LOSWIFT™Lactulose promote the absorption and retention in the body of several minerals such as Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe. The effect of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on the rat's bone strength was studied. The results showed that LOSWIFT™Lactulose increases the absorption of calcium in both osteoporosis and bone strength. It has been reported that LOSWIFT™Lactulose increases the absorptions of Ca and Mg in dogs and rats, and increases the rupture strength of the femur in an ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis. The study had evaluated the effect of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on the calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) absorption. This study was performed on adult men. It showed that the absorption of calcium and magnesium increases with increasing amounts of LOSWIFT™Lactulose administration. The twenty - four volunteer adults are fed with food containing LOSWIFT™Lactulose, calcium and magnesium. A quantity of 300 mg containing 20 mg of Ca containing 44Ca and a quantity of 150 mg of Mg containing 28 mg of 25Mg was orally administered. Together with calcium and magnesium, a dose of 0 (placebo), 2 and 4 g of LOSWIFT™Lactulose is also administrated. To measure the ratios of stable isotopes, the urine samples were picked up after ingestion of the administrated calcium, magnesium and LOSWIFT™Lactulose. The results show that the urinary stable isotopes ratios increased with increasing of LOSWIFT™Lactulose quantities. Significant differences were observed in the calcium ratio between 0 and 4 g of LOSWIFT™Lactulose; and in the magnesium ratios between 0 and 2 g of LOSWIFT™Lactulose and between 0 and 4 g of LOSWIFT™Lactulose. However, the authors did not observe any change in the rate of bone resorption after LOSWIFT™Lactulose ingestion. In summary, this clinical trial has confirmed that LOSWIFT™Lactulose enhances the absorptions of Ca and Mg.
Reduction of Blood Ammonia Levels
LOSWIFT™Lactulose reduces bacterial production of ammonia in the intestines, draws ammonia from the blood to the colon and then drains it through the waste. LOSWIFT™Lactulose is hydrolysed by colonic bacteria and acts as promoting agent for their growth and increasing biomass formation. However, for the synthesis of bacterial protein, ammonia and nitrogen are used, but the production of ammonia is inhibited by acidifying the intestinal content. Independent of pH, LOSWIFT™Lactulose acts by increasing the incorporation of ammonia in the bacterial proteins. In addition, it has been shown in vitro that the LOSWIFT™Lactulose inhibits the synthesis and the activity of bacterial enzymes that generate ammonia.
Application Advantages
Clinical Efficacy and Safety in Portal Systemic Encephalopathy (PSE) Treatment
Prasad et al. studied the influence of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on the hepatic encephalopathy (HE) involving sixty - one patients. They were divided into two groups: thirty - one patients received LOSWIFT™Lactulose treatment for 3 months, while thirty patients received no treatment. The results showed that the number of abnormal neuropsychological tests decreased among patients who took the LOSWIFT™Lactulose compared with the others. Moreover, a significant improvement in cognitive function was observed in the LOSWIFT™Lactulose group. Moreover, the LOSWIFT™Lactulose group showed improvement in their quality of life, with significant improvement in emotional behaviour. Different studies compared the effect of LOSWIFT™Lactulose with different products which are used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy to know which one is better. The reported results showed that LOSWIFT™Lactulose could be potentially used in the treatment of this disease. The effects of LOSWIFT™Lactulose on blood ammonia and faecal pH in beagles with an end - to - side portacaval shunt have been studied. Concentrations of blood ammonia before and 2 weeks after the operation were 4.65 ± 0.34 μg/mL and 8.66 ± 0.60 μg/mL, respectively. However, the concentration of ammonia in the blood in the control and LOSWIFT™Lactulose - treated groups after administration of meat is 12.65 ± 1.64 μg/mL and 8.45 ± 0.90 μg/mL, respectively. These findings support the clinical application of LOSWIFT™Lactulose in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy with both efficacy and safety.
Advantages in Chronic Constipation Management Across Age Groups
The treatment of constipation should be graded, starting with changes of the lifestyle and diet. It is recommended to change the diet to increase fibre intake. In the next step, if constipation persists, laxatives will be recommended. There is a huge variety of laxatives available in the market. The modes of action consist of increasing faecal mass (bulk - forming), stimulating colonic nerves or lubricating to osmotically active substances like LOSWIFT™Lactulose. Since the 1960s, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has been administered to treat constipation in patients of all ages, including babies. LOSWIFT™Lactulose is an osmotic laxative. It is used for relief of constipation, including chronic constipation. It works in about 24 - 48 h. LOSWIFT™Lactulose is unchanged when it reaches the intestines. Once in the intestines, bacteria therein split LOSWIFT™Lactulose into its active components. This increases the action of the intestines and keeps the liquid, so that stools are propelled and become easier to pass. LOSWIFT™Lactulose is not digested in the small intestine as the specific disaccharidase is lacking. It transits unchanged to the colon where it serves as an energy source for the carbohydrate - splitting bacteria, predominantly lactobacillus acidophilus and L - bifidus. During this fermentation process, low molecular organic acids such as lactic and formic acids are formed. Compared with traditional stimulant laxatives, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has a milder effect, does not cause intestinal spasms and electrolyte disorders, and is safe for long - term use, especially suitable for patients with chronic constipation and the elderly. This makes LOSWIFT™Lactulose an advantageous choice for chronic constipation management across different age groups.
Multi - Disease Treatment Capability
LOSWIFT™Lactulose can treat multiple diseases through different mechanisms, providing comprehensive medical solutions. It has been shown to be effective in treating constipation, hepatic encephalopathy, and inflammatory bowel disease, among other conditions.
High Safety Profile
LOSWIFT™Lactulose is generally well - tolerated and safe for long - term use across various age groups, including infants, children, and the elderly. It is not absorbed systemically, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions and interactions with other medications.
