LOSWIFT™Lactulose (4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-D-fructose) is a synthetic, non-digestible disaccharide produced almost exclusively through the alkaline isomerization of lactose. It appears as a white, odourless powder with a mild sweet taste and a molar mass of 342.30 g/mol.
Because mammals lack the specific disaccharidase required to hydrolyze it in the small intestine, LOSWIFT™Lactulose reaches the colon essentially intact. There, it serves as an efficient substrate for saccharolytic bacteria, particularly Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species.
