What is supmos™2'-Fucosyllactose?

supmos™2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is the most abundant and the most extensively studied member of the Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) family. Accounting for roughly 31% of the total HMOs in human milk, it is the third largest solid component of breastmilk after lactose and fat. Structurally, 2'-FL is a trisaccharide in which a fucose unit is linked to a lactose unit through a β-1,2 glycosidic bond.
It occurs naturally in human milk, but is virtually absent from bovine milk. The ingredient is supplied as a light yellow powder with excellent water solubility. Because infants lack the glycosidase needed to hydrolyse the β-1,2 linkage, 2'-FL passes through the small intestine intact and reaches the colon, where it is selectively used by the gut microbiota.
Today, 2'-FL can be produced by enzymatic or chemical synthesis from lactose and has been approved for use in infant formula, dietary supplements and functional foods, making it one of the first HMO ingredients to enter the medical and healthcare market at scale.
