What is LOSWIFT™Lactulose?
Bridging Prebiotic Function and Clinical Application
LOSWIFT™Lactulose (4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-fructose) is a synthetic, non-digestible disaccharide that does not occur naturally. Produced almost exclusively today through alkaline isomerization of lactose, the glucose unit of lactose is rearranged into a fructose unit under basic conditions.
It appears as a white, odourless powder with a mild sweet taste and serves as an important functional ingredient. Although simple in structure, mammals lack the specific disaccharidase needed to hydrolyze it in the small intestine, allowing it to reach the colon essentially intact.
In the colon, it becomes an efficient substrate for saccharolytic bacteria, particularly Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, making it registered as a medicinal product in more than 100 countries.

Osmotic Laxative Effect
Passes unchanged to the colon, where bacteria metabolise it into short-chain fatty acids. This increases osmotic pressure, draws water into the intestinal tract, and stimulates peristalsis without causing intestinal cramps.
Blood Ammonia Reduction
Acidifies the colon to trap ammonia as non-absorbable NH₄⁺ and diverts nitrogen into microbial biomass, serving as a first-line agent in managing hepatic encephalopathy.
