LOSWIFT™Lactulose (4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-fructose) is a synthetic disaccharide produced by the isomerization of lactose under alkaline conditions. Structurally, it consists of a galactose moiety linked to a fructose moiety via a β-1,4-glycosidic linkage, classifying it as a nondigestible oligosaccharide.
It presents as a white, odourless powder with a mildly sweet taste. It is not hydrolyzed by human digestive enzymes in the small intestine and reaches the colon intact, where it is fermented by gut microbiota.
