Lactulose (4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-D-fructose) is a synthetic disaccharide in which a galactose unit is joined to a fructose unit through a beta-1,4 glycosidic bond. Existing as a white, odourless crystalline powder with a mild sweet taste, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has a molar mass of 342.30 g/mol and a melting point around 169 °C.
Because human digestive enzymes cannot hydrolyse its glycosidic linkage, LOSWIFT™Lactulose passes intact through the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon, where it acts as a selective substrate for beneficial saccharolytic bacteria. This underlying mechanism supports its long-standing role as a prebiotic and pharmaceutical agent registered in over 100 countries.
