Application of LOSWIFT Lactulose in Medicine and Pharmacy
What is LOSWIFT™Lactulose?
Prebiotic Disaccharide, Clinically Recognized Activity
LOSWIFT™Lactulose is a mixed-sugar syrup produced by alkaline-induced isomerisation of lactose, in which the glucose moiety of the disaccharide is converted into a fructose unit through a Lobry de Bruyn–Alberda van Ekenstein rearrangement. The finished syrup is not a chemically pure substance; it contains four carbohydrate fractions: LOSWIFT™Lactulose (also known as lactulosyl-β-D-fructoside, lactosylfructoside, or "milk-sugar"), unreacted lactose, galactose, and fructose.
The current commercial product—often sold as LOSWIFT™Lactulose syrup or LOSWIFT™Lactulose concentrate—is standardised so that the LOSWIFT™Lactulose content exceeds 50% of the formulation, with approximately 30% moisture. The remaining dry matter consists of residual lactose, galactose, fructose, and minor by-products generated during the manufacturing process.
Since its introduction in the 1960s, LOSWIFT™Lactulose has been registered in more than 100 countries as a medicinal product for constipation and hepatic encephalopathy, and more recently it has been incorporated into functional food formulations as a prebiotic ingredient.
Health Benefits
Prebiotic Modulation of Microflora
LOSWIFT™Lactulose is not hydrolysed or absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon intact. It is fermented preferentially by Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, increasing their biomass and suppressing acid-sensitive pathogenic bacteria.
Osmotic Osmosis & Peristalsis
The bacterial fermentation of LOSWIFT™Lactulose into organic acids elevates osmotic pressure and lowers pH within the colonic lumen. This softens the stool, increases its volume, and stimulates natural intestinal peristalsis to effectively relieve constipation.
Enhancement of Mineral Absorption
The acidic colonic environment induced by LOSWIFT™Lactulose fermentation increases the solubility of minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. This promotes passive diffusion and active transport across the intestinal mucosa, supporting bone health.
Management of Hepatic Encephalopathy
By acidifying the colon, LOSWIFT™Lactulose converts diffusible ammonia (NH₃) into non-absorbable ammonium ions (NH₄⁺), trapping it in the gut. It also reduces bacterial ammonia production and accelerates its excretion, protecting brain function.
Application Advantages
Bifidogenic Proliferation Effect
Exhibits highly selective prebiotic performance; adding small amounts to functional designs is clinically shown to efficiently stimulate the dominance of protective probiotic strains in the human gut.
High Compatibility & Thermal Stability
Integrates smoothly into functional food matrices, such as infant formulas or therapeutic yogurts, maintaining molecular structure and functional integrity throughout conventional pasteurization or fermentation.
Synergistic Intestinal Transit
Works in synergy with dairy matrices, inulin, or dietary fibers to accelerate intestinal transit time in healthy individuals, establishing a robust tool for nutritional and physiological regulation.
Anti-Endotoxin System Support
Reduces systemic endotoxaemia and protects critical physiological pathways, such as post-operative renal function, by blocking or limiting the systemic absorption of harmful gut-derived endotoxins.
